GECIL coulometers are designed for accurate determination of moisture in the range from several ppm to 1% in liquid, solid and gaseous samples. Coulometry is an absolute method, because it does not require the use of standard samples.
Coulometers are available with two different types of generator electrode. For a generator electrode without a diaphragm, only one reagent, an anolyte, is required, and the electrode itself requires virtually no maintenance. It is suitable for most coulometric moisture determinations.
The use of a generator electrode with a diaphragm is recommended in the following cases: very low moisture content (less than 100 micrograms of water), when using ketone reagents or with a high content of polar co-solvents (more than 10%). For this type of electrode, in addition to an anolyte, a catholyte is also required for operation. The catholyte is poured into the chamber of the generator electrode and “artificially” increases the conductivity of the medium.
